Yancy's job is to prevent crime and if necessary, arrest the culprits. His constant companion is Pahoo-Ka-Ta-Wah, an Indian who watches his back, keeping him safe. The Pawnee Indian never speaks. His sidekick only uses sign language. His Indian name stands for Wolf Who Stands In Water. No one knows that Derringer is a secret agent who works for free to help prevent crime, except for Colton. Yancy owns a riverboat, the Sultana. Jock Mahoney stars in the title role.

The story takes place just after the Civil War. An ex-Confederate soldier-turned-card-shark, adventurer, riverboat gambler and crime fighter, Yancy Derringer does not go anywhere without his Derringer pistol and his six-foot tall Indian confidant. Derringer, who also carries a cane with a hidden sword, is an ex-Confederate soldier turned gambler in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is also a suave lady's man. In reality, he is working for John Colton, the civil administrator of the city.
